Early spring is a proper time to fertilize your perennials, shrubs, trees, and garden beds. The earth is waking from a long winter and the new growth is getting ready to absorb the vital nutrients and minerals they need to flourish.
Shrubs and trees may be a little more difficult to fertilize. Make sure you distinguish what you are fertilizing and know the difference when it comes to an acid loving shrub or tree. Feed your acid loving shrubs such as evergreens, hydrangeas, rhododendrons, and even blueberries with Espoma's Organic Holly Tone. Espoma Plant Tone, Tree Tone, and Flower Tone are great fertilizers for all of your other trees and shrubs.
A fertilizing method I like to use is what I call "Root Feeding Method". It is more effective because fertilizing gets to the roots by going deep into the soil, and the trees or shrubs are less susceptible to a drought spell. The design is simple, think of the shrub or tree your fertilizing as an umbrella. When you use your umbrella in the rain, the rain runs off the edge of the umbrella forming a drip edge. Put a series of holes into the soil at least a foot deep, about the width of a broom handle, and far enough away from the trunk of the shrub or tree, the distance of the drip edge. Fertilize holes with the fertilizer of you choice. When it rains, the fertilizer will dissolve and go deep into the soil, where the roots will absorb it.
Be careful not to put too many holes around your shrubs. A 3 foot shrub would take about 3 to 4 holes maximum.
